The last of the five educational buildings of Utrecht University of Applied Sciences on the Utrecht Science Park was designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen and realized by the SPARK consortium. The Heidelberglaan 15 building accommodates eight educational institutions in the sectors economy, management, information communication and technology and media and communication.
The atrium forms the social heart and central connecting route of the building. Traffic flows through the "kaleidoscopic stairs, bridges and elevators", according to Schmidt Hammer Lassen. "This makes the atrium the meeting place of the building, where roads cross, experience is shared and insight is gained into the other institutions".
Sustainability is central to the design and realization of the building. This translates, among other things, into the application of LED lighting, WKO and PV cells. BREEAM Excellent is the starting point of the consortium.
The assignment of Utrecht University of Applied Sciences is a DBM contract. The SPARK consortium will take care of the maintenance for fifteen years, following on from the design and construction. The maintenance will also be carried out sustainably, with, for example, the use of electric transport for maximum reuse of released materials.
Commissioned by SPARK, Bim&Beyond has optimized the plan in an intensive and very good collaboration with the contractor and architect and has taken care of the architectural modeling and drawing work, including application for environmental permit.
